Around 2,000 years ago, a unique boat called “hezhou” appeared in southern China. The hull of the hezhou was hollowed out from a whole tree and shaped like a large walnut shell, hence the name “hezhou”. Unlike other boats, hezhou did not have a bottom or sides, only a closed hull that could carry dozens of people.
Hezhou appeared in the ancient Jiangnan region of China and was the main means of transportation for the local water people. With its numerous rivers and vast waterways, the unique design of hezhou was very suitable for use in this area. At that time, people used hezhou for fishing, hunting, travel, and transportation, making hezhou an indispensable presence in the Jiangnan region.
The special structure of hezhou gave it excellent sailing performance. Because the hull was hollowed out, hezhou was relatively light, so it floated very stable in the water. In addition, the unique shape of hezhou allowed it to smoothly pass through narrow waterways and winding rivers, showing strong adaptability.
The bow and stern of hezhou were designed with unique iron decorations, making it very beautiful. The boat also had a mast and sail, which could adapt to different water areas and wind conditions. The design and craftsmanship of hezhou showcased the high level of development of ancient Chinese water transportation.
Ancient hezhou has left many beautiful legends in local folklore and literary works, and has been used as a subject for painting, sculpture, and crafts. Hezhou is not only a means of transportation, but also a symbol of aquatic culture and national traditions.
Although hezhou is rare to see today, it still holds an important place in people’s eyes as a unique ancient Chinese water transportation. The design concept and sailing experience of hezhou also left a precious historical and cultural heritage for the development of ancient Chinese maritime technology and shipbuilding craftsmanship.
